Is it a smart move to buy stock in E-Trade (ETFC) I have an account with etrade and it’s great. Commissions a little high but it has great research and features. I don’t think they are going to go out of business, and the stock can’t go lower than it is at right now, 3.47 a share.

Yes it can go a lot lower …to ZERO maybe
They are in serious financial trouble and if someone doesnt buy them or bail them, they’ll be gone. It has nothing to do with their research or commissions. It has to do with Collateralized Mortgage Obligations.
Go to Yahoo Financials and read some information before sinking any money into this stock.

Have you studied the stock? Are you confident that they’ve solved their problems? Do you see a catalyst that will cause earnings and the stock price to go up? If you can answer “yes” to all of these questions, then it may be a smart move to buy the stock. Buying a stock that is fairly valued or undervalued and riding it up can make a lot of money.
If your answer to any of these questions is “no” or “I don’t know”, then it’s not a smart move. You have no idea if the price has hit bottom.
I see a lot of questions on this website from people who think that a cheap stock price means that its a good deal. They couldn’t be more wrong. A cheap price can mean that the company had some temporary problems and is poised for a turnaround. It can also mean that the company has lousy management and the stock is cheap because investors have no confidence. You have to study the company to determine which it is.
If you buy ETFC, you’re basically hoping that one of their competitors buys them out.
actually, you never know if its going to go bankrupt. 3.47 a share for such a big business is bad. But good of course if you beleive it will go up. hmm, i’ve never thought about investing in an investment company lol, but hey who knows. Isn’t TdAmertrade thinking of purchasing Etrade?
Now, a purchase like that can make it go up, but it can also change the symbol therefore the symbol that you were using is no longer trading.
Anywho, do some research on that and see if its worth it.
ps. pretty much all of the popular online investment companies are the same, only different commission. I use Tdameritrade, but im thinking of moving to Scottrade becasue it has a cheaper commission
I have three etrade accounts and I absolutely love everything about etrade. Transferred in from Brownco and I love the research, web site, $5 commissions, etc. I pray they don’t go out of business because I love everything about trading with them.
