You can sell after the ex-dividend date but before the dividend date, and you still send you the dividend.
If you have the stock registered you and you possess the actual stock certificate, the company sends a check (assuming they have your correct address). If you have the stock in a brokerage account, your cash balance in the account will be increased by the amount of the dividend check the brokerage receives on your behalf.
