I bought a nice purple leather coat online, and I got a good deal on it. But it smells like motor oil! Is there any way to get the smell out, or is this just a sad side effect of dyed (probably cheap) leather?

Try getting it cleaned. Expensive I know but that would be he only way to get rid of it. Or try putting it in a sealed bag with a box of baking soda. Get one of the kind that is for refrigerator. You don’t want to get it on the coat. Seal it up for a week or 2 and see if that helps. Also hang it out in the garage to see if the smell fades. Good luck.
Take it to a professional leather cleaner, your local dry cleaners usually have a company they use. Should cost between $50.00 to $75.00 depending on the coat. Your dry cleaner should beable to give a quote before sending the coat out.
