Real Quick Question Before I Run Out To Buy This Please?!?

I am battling a toothache and I know that oil of clove was one recommended remedy. My question is will regular cloves work just as well? For instance if I chewed them? I ask this because I read online that oil of clove can be dangerous if you swallow it, and I don’t want to take that risk. Can I get the same relief from regular whole cloves from the grocery store as I would be able to get from the clove oil? Thank you so much!

I’ve never heard of this! I would call my dentist, take some tylenol, and get some Anbesol until I could get in to see the dentist!

The oil is better, the numbing agent is concentrated.
You just have to use a very small amount and try not to swallow too much. Its only dangerous if you swallow a large amount (like a teaspoonful).
A few drops on a Q-tip dabbed on the tooth will be fine.
Chewing cloves would be worse, because you won’t be able to help swallowing some, and there isn’t a lot of oil in one or two cloves you’d have to chew a lot.

I would run out to the pharmacy and pick up some toothache medicine after I called my dentist. Oil of clove is a temporary solution, tylenol is better.

Yep, you’ll get the same reaction. Regular cloves do have a MUCH stronger flavor tho. Sometimes it’s too much for certain people, it’s kindof spicy until it numbs your mouth.

never heard of cloves treating toothaches !!! why dont u ask the pharmacy buing from (obviously dont ask the grocery).. all i can think of with cloves is indian curry !! try an analgesic (pain reliever) it should work better i think

Clove has sort of a numbing effect, much like Anbesol except that is tastes a lot better.
We used to use it as kids.

im guessing ur talking about temporary relief, cos cloves aint gonna fix it if its long term……if so, roll some vodka around ur mouth, see a dentist in the morning(hes probably gonna think ur a wino tho) best thing i found for temporary relief, other than the secretary the agency sent, was chewing on a paracetamol…if that doesnt work, ur screwed

If you put oil of clove on a tiny cotton pellet (I can’t remember the trade name, but there is a company that sells it in a small bottle with cotton pellets and a small tweezer), and if there is actually a hole in the tooth where the tooth has broken or a filling has fallen out, you can press the oil-soaked pellet into the hole and not much will leak out. The oil of clove will actually gradually kill the nerve in the tooth, and you will not have pain. You will not get the same results from whole cloves (oil of clove is actually clove leaf oil). If you are suffering from a lost filling, there is also a temporary filling which is clay-like, and you can press that into the space left by the missing filling to protect the tooth and relieve pain until you can get to a dentist.
If there is not a hole in the tooth, neither remedy is really going to relieve the pain. All you can do is take painkillers until you can get to the dentist. Sometimes either very hot tea or very icy water will “shock” the nerve and kill the pain until the tooth “re-tempers.”

I did this as a kid and it did help a lot more than you think, but not like a narcotic. I would wrap a bunch of whole cloves in light cheesecloth or other porous cloth and place in my mouth. I would suck on them a bit and keep them in contact with the tooth. After a while, it does get a bit numb and really dulls the pain but doesn’t take it away completely.

Ok. If there is anything I can help you with, it is a toothache. They can be worse than labor. You ned to buy one of those little toothache kits. They are very inexpensive. The cotton balls are miniature and the stuff you put on the that they supply in the box has oil of cloves in it. You can make some warm STRONG clove tea and squish it tenderly in your moust to numb it. Lastly, baby Numzit works well for numbing. Don’t let it go too long. Get to the dentist so you can keep your teeth. Good luck and God bless.

if you take them and ground them up to powder, don’t chew them , you have a tooth ache already.

No. I’ve used oil of cloves for years. Just dab a bit on your finger and rub it on the tooth. You won’t swallow it, any more than you would swallow Anbesol or any tooth-numbing remedy.
I don’t know what chewing them might do.
    Good luck!

Why not try taking IBU Profen – you can get it from Pak n Save and it’s under $3. My partner had two wisdom teeth taken out last year and he used this – he was pain free for up to 5 hours before it wore off and you had to take some more. Also, drinking water with a little salt stops infection.
